One of the recent phenomenon in the fight to end illiteracy in the world is the birth of mobile schools which are effective in bringing education close to the target market. It brings teachers, books and other learning materials to the places where it really matters – the rural areas where there are no schools or where teachers will not dare to go. These are far flung places even in advance countries where basic education for both children and adults are not available. Worse is the situation of people in under developed countries where education is akin to privilege that is enjoyed by a minority. This is aggravated by wars and famine. Education becomes the last item in people’s priority. They would rather look for food than sit down and listen to a few miracle workers. In war torn countries, it is enough that a child knows how to fire a rifle. That is what he needs to survive over food.
The kind-hearted souls that make up the teacher volunteers from progressive nations dare to change this. They leave the comforts of their airconditioned rooms and plane in to these ill-fated countries. They carry with them their lesson plans and books, along with black boards and folding chairs to reach out to the real unlucky souls. They go to far flung areas often these are also dangerous just to lecture on kids and sometimes adults on a variety of topics. Even without classrooms, they can set up a learning area by assembling a couple of folding chairs and a blackboard. This is their stage for the fulfillment their mission. The venerable effort to educate those most willing to learn.
